The Wolves and Lady Wolves pose together to show off their trophies.
For the first time in Buford High School history, both the girls and boys basketball teams are state champions! The Lady Wolves beat Southwest DeKalb, 60-42, and the Men’s Team beat Cedar Shoals, 75-61, at Stegeman Coliseum on the University of Georgia campus in the GHSA Class AAAAA Basketball State Championships.
For the Lady Wolves, it is their fifth state championship in the last nine years. For the men’s team it is the first basketball state championship in Buford High School history.
Buford Boys Roll Into State Semifinals
The Buford Wolves took control early and never looked back on their way to a 94-72 win over Warner Robins in the GHSA Class AAAAA state quarterfinals at Buford City Arena.
Warner Robins only lead of the game came on the opening basket, but the Wolves took control from there, mostly on the defensive end. By halftime, Buford had a 56-23 lead.
Lady Wolves Advance to State Semifinals
Though they started trailing Warner Robins 7-2 in the early minutes of the game, the Lady Wolves used a seven-point run in less than a minute, followed by another seven-point run in the second quarter to take control of the game and defeat Warner Robins 77-56 in the quarterfinals of the GHSA Class AAAAA Girls State Tournament. After leading 22-21, the Lady Wolves went on their first run late in the second quarter, then extended their lead to 40-27 by halftime. Tory Ozment led Buford with 22 points. The Lady Wolves also got a combined 27 points from Audrey Weiner and Rachel Dobbs. 24 of those points came on three-pointers. Buford hit 10 three-pointers.
Buford Clinches Fifth State Title with Win over Southwest Dekalb
Throughout the season, Buford’s depth has been a major key to their success. It was no different when they defeated Southwest Dekalb 60-42 at Stegman Coliseum to clinch the Class AAAAA State Title. It’s Buford’s fifth state title in girls basketball, and second in three years.
Nine Wolves (29-3) scored in the game. Tory Ozment led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Buford had a three point lead in the first quarter, but Marissa Bruce scored with 5:46 to go in the quarter. From that point on, Buford led the game.
Buford also got scoring from Tate Walters and Jessica Nelson, who had nine points a piece. Audrey Weiner scored eight points and six rebounds.
Their 18-point margin against Southwest Dekalb was the smallest of the postseason.
Buford Boys Defeat Cedar Shoals to Win State Title
After the first three quarters of the game, it looked as if the fourth quarter of the Class AAAAA Boys State Championship Game between Buford (29-2) and Cedar Shoals (27-5) would go down to the wire like the previous three affairs.
However, the Wolves used defense and rebounding to pull away from the Jaguars en route to a 75-61 victory to capture the school’s first state title in boys basketball. For Buford coach Eddie Martin, this is his eighth state title in his stellar coaching career.
Philandrous Fleming led the Jaguars with 30 points. Marcus Watson led the Wolves in scoring with 27 points and seven rebounds. He also hit 6 of 7 free throws in the fourth quarter.
